Trip to the Elbe spring
He who visits the Giant Mountains and starts out tours, aimed at admiring the beauties of nature, should not miss the trip to the spring of the longest Czech river Elbe. The Elbe spring rises on the Elbe meadow close to the border with Poland.
In 1684 this spring was consecrated symbolically by Jan of Talemberk, the bishop in Hradec Králové, and the Elbe meadow (Labská louka) became definitely the Czech territory. In 1968 the Elbe spring was modified and the metal board with coats of arms of all cities and towns, through which Elbe flows on its nearly 1,200 km long run into the North Sea, was installed here. The so called Czech road passes through this place and the signpost of red, green and yellow tourist routes can be found here.
You can start your trip to the Elbe spring from Horní Mísečky, the well known sports and in particular winter resort, not far from Špindlerův Mlýn. We will climb up on the slope of Medvědín to the Vrbata chalet and then to the Pančava waterfall, one of the most striking Giant Mountains falls. It lies ca 1 km to the south from the Elbe chalet (Labská bouda), on the Pančava brook. The river Pančava overcomes step by step the steep wall of the Labský důl 248 m high, which is the record height among all Czech waterfalls. After you walk a little, do not forget to turn to the so called Ambroz observation point (Ambrožova vyhlídka), a place named after one of the first conservationists of the Giant Mountains nature; marvellous panorama to Labský důl, Labské jámy, Kozí hřbety, Kotel and Lysá hora mountain opens to your view.
The road up on the edge of the Labské jámy corries is accessible only in summer and in autumn. During the winter season it is necessary to use the higher winter trail edged by protective posts at adequate distance from large snow cornices and sheer slopes. Both ways will lead you to the Elbe chalet and from there you will continue towards the Elbe spring.
You can also use the yellow marked Horse Road (Koňská cesta) to the frontier with Poland. After you have seen the 300 m deep precipices of the Sněžné jámy corries you can walk on the yellow marked trail, climb up the stone outcrop of Violík and again you will get to the Elbe Spring.
